Our Rector, the Rev. Dr. Charlie Dupree
Below is the initial letter from the St. Paul’s Vestry announcing the hiring call for our new rector, originally sent out on June 19th, 2019. Please email email@example.com for more information.
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
The vestry of St. Paul’s announces with delight the calling of the Rev. Dr. Charles T. (“Charlie”) Dupree to be our next rector. An exceptionally gifted priest, an experienced and effective leader, and a compelling and thoughtful preacher, he has been the rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Bloomington, Indiana, for the past 11 years.
Parishioners will be able to welcome and meet him in late August, when he will begin to take on his rectorship.
In summing up their faith in Dr. Dupree as the right person to lead St. Paul’s, search committee and vestry members praised his passion for ministry; his imagination, wit, and compassion; and his sensitive understanding of what makes St. Paul’s special and distinctive.
“Through our extensive discernment process, we became convinced that Charlie, as he has asked us to call him, will be the upright and faithful pastor for whom we have prayed,” says Lee Switz, senior warden. “He has the experience, intelligence, and temperament to be a transformational leader for St. Paul’s – one who will work in close collaboration with the vestry and congregation to articulate and achieve a compelling vision for our church.”
During his time at Trinity, Charlie led the church in managing conflict, facilitated a movement toward financial health and transparency, established a more intentional voice of welcome and service in the community, and shaped vibrant worship that calls us to closeness with God, self, and neighbor.
“I feel called to St. Paul’s,” says Charlie, “because [as a parish] you want to incarnate inclusivity and are willing to engage in important conversations that are affecting the church and the country today. You also have a desire to live into Christ’s call to love God and neighbor. You are rooted in tradition, but also have an imagination for how God is calling us to be church in the 21st century. I believe that worship is our heartbeat, and from that experience of God, prayer, and sacrament, we are sent into the world and the community to be the hands, feet, and heart of Christ.”
Charlie was born and raised in eastern North Carolina and was baptized in St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Speed, N.C. Since that big moment in that small town in 1970, Charlie has been shaped by God as an artist, a musician, and a priest. His accomplishments in ministry include serving as the designer of the General Convention liturgies in Indianapolis and Salt Lake City, opening an interfaith emergency winter shelter, supporting an ecumenical feeding ministry, and starting a young artist’s series.
Charlie earned his Master’s of Divinity from the Virginia Theological Seminary and, more recently, his Doctorate in Biblical Preaching from Luther Seminary. He has served in multiple ministry settings, including associate rector/campus minister of St. Paul’s in Greenville, N.C.; rector of St. Gregory’s in Woodstock, N.Y.; and most recently at Trinity Episcopal Church in Bloomington.
Charlie and his husband, Matthew Cole, a realtor, have been together since 1996. Charlie and Matthew love the Episcopal Church and are eager to offer their hearts and gifts to this new journey that God has placed before them.
The vestry is grateful to all who prayed and helped during this time of transition, and for the hard work and dedication of the following people: the Rev. Sue Eaves, our first interim rector; the Rev. Bill Queen, our second interim rector; St. Paul’s previous associate rector, the Rev. Molly Bosscher; our previous senior warden, Jane Nelson, and vestrymembers; our search consultant, Roseleen “Spud” Rick; and the search committee: Steve Micas, chair; Bruce Cruser, Miriam Farris, Mark Gordon, Victoria Linney Howell, Stephen Peple, and Shannon Sinclair.
Please join us in warmly welcoming Charlie and Matthew to St. Paul’s and to Richmond as we look toward a new season in the life of our parish.
