Past Advent events

BLUE CHRISTMAS

Blue Christmas will be held in the Chapel at 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 18.

Dealing with the death of a loved one, facing life after divorce or separation, coping with job loss, or living with cancer or other illnesses make parties and holiday happiness painful for many in our community. The Blue Christmas service offers contemplation, rest, and a time to mourn while looking forward in hope to the coming of Jesus into our world.

THE HOMELESS MEMORIAL SERVICE

Wednesday, December 21, 2016: The Homeless Memorial Service will be held at 4 p.m. in the Memorial Garden

WORKSHOP

Our Advent Workshop, The Journey of Reconciliation will be led by Dr. Carl Stauffer, and will be held on Saturday, December 3rd, from 9-3 p.m. in Scott Hall. Dr. Stauffer is an associate professor in the world-renowned Center for Justice and Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University. He will lead a workshop on “The Journey of Reconciliation,” which will include concepts, tools and frameworks to understand and enact justice and peace in your own context. Suggested donation of $10 for lunch. Please let Pete Nunnally know if you are coming at pnunnally@stpaulsrva.org.

Dr. Stauffer has an extensive background in justice and reconciliation, having spent 15 years in South Africa, working with various transitional processes such as the Peace Accords, Community-Police Forums, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Local Community Development structures. His work has taken him to twenty African countries and ten other countries in the Caribbean, Middle East, Europe, and the Balkans. SPECIAL SERVICES SCHEDULE THIS ADVENT:

ADVENT LESSONS & CAROLS

Advent Lessons & Carols will be at 5 p.m. in the sanctuary on Sunday, December 11.

The choirs of St. Paul’s will sing a service of Advent Lessons and Carols. The Service of Lessons and Carols for Advent was originally celebrated at King’s College, Cambridge. The order of service includes old liturgical forms that vividly express the Church’s preparation for the coming of the Lord Jesus both in the festival of Christmas and in the consummation of the ages. The service alternates lessons from the Old and the New Testaments with carols and hymns, finally climaxing in St. Matthew’s Gospel, in which the angel brings the news that Mary will bring forth a son, “and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” Reception will follow.
